Guide on Replacing Aluminium Window Frames

It’s no secret that standard aluminum window frames mandate constant maintenance, which, unfortunately, is more often than not quite costly—especially when not properly done. As such, if you want to make some improvements and want to replace your aluminum window frames, you must follow a proper and correct procedure. While this might seem tasking and somewhat challenging, it is usually worth the time and effort.

If you want to replace your frames, we are here for you. Here is a comprehensive guide on replacing aluminum window frames. But first…

What Are Aluminum Window Frames?

Aluminum frames are generally long-standing, durable frames that boast a slim profile and are easy to maintain. Manufacturers usually install thermal breaks strategically along the frames in various sections to generate higher insulation levels, especially since aluminium is among the best heat conductors. These molded window sections are either welded or screwed together after the window profiles are extruded by such equipment

Ideally, you will more often than not spend much more on aluminum window frames compared to standard vinyl and fiberglass frame windows. Nonetheless, they are a notably cheaper option than the standard aesthetically pleasing wooden window options.

What Do You Need to Replace Your Aluminum Window Frames?

Surprisingly, the process of replacing aluminum frames begins long before installation. Ideally, you can purchase same size windows to replace the old ones without any issues.

First, you need to take all accurate measurements before getting your new windows to ensure that they will properly fit into the opening spaces with minimal or no alterations.

Also, during your window-shopping experience, it is important to ensure you are getting the appropriate ones that suit your needs. Furthermore, they need to come with product warranties that cover you in the event of shatters and breaks while installing.

After ensuring the above, here is a simple guide to replace and install your aluminium window frames

Step-by-step Guide on How to Replace Aluminum Window Frames

#1 – Removing Your Old Window

The most important step is taking out the old frames and placing them aside. Ideally, the aluminum framing is usually quite leaky, a resultant of air pressure, because they are simply screwed into a window. The aluminum frames are usually held in with screws that pierce through the window jamb and into your house’s frames.

Start by carefully removing the windows to ensure they don’t fall off while you are dismantling the entire frame. The frame should comprise pins that you can slide smoothly to one side to safely remove the windows from your aluminum frame.

Alternatively, when you pull your window towards your direction, give them a 45-degree approximate angle, and this way, they should easily come off.

Afterwards, unscrew the frame’s jamb. The windows should be located along the frame’s bottom and top. Simply remove them, and as you will find, the metal jamb should fall off effortlessly. Once the old frame is clear, you should now have the wall studs across all the opening sides.

#2 Insert Your New Frame

After ensuring the aluminum metal frames are off, the next thing is to install the new sill. The most important thing is to ensure you have accurate measurements before you start installing the new frame to avoid repeating the work. In case you find that the window is larger than the opening, you should adjust by extending your opening to allow proper fitting.

To do so, get yourself a crowbar to help you pull out the window’s old studs and subsequently extend them to suit your needs. Nonetheless, it is essential to remember to leave a few inches (1-2) around the jamb’s edges to enable further adjustments.

#3 Install Your Windows

By now, provided you have followed the mentioned steps, you should now have an installed new window where the old aluminum frames were. To ensure the measurements are accurate, you will need to use shims and a lever for correct placement before you finalize by attaching the windows to your frame.

Ideally, this helps ensure that your windows open and close well, not to mention having a proper seal when closed. To ensure everything is accurately placed, attach your window frame’s trimming to help conceal the working components of the window.

Final Word

As a modern homeowner, replacing aluminum window frames is essential and a worthwhile decision. Not all window replacements usually run smoothly. Nonetheless, although removing old aluminum window frames can be quite a challenge, it is certainly worth the effort, especially if you follow these few steps.

Good Luck!
